Ok I want to mention the news…I am just going to bluntly type it…I am no longer vegan.
“Whhhaaattt? Why??” I could hear you say that and might be puzzled since I’ve been a big advocate for veganism.
But yes in January, I decided and it honestly wasn’t an easy decision after hitting my 2 years of a full on Vegan. But let me put it this way, my body was not happy with only plant foods. I am surely not against it, and see how other bodies can benefit but let me explain my story..
It started in January when I was thinking of my plan for my next prep for figure competition. I was planning to do Emerald Cup, so I wanted to be prepared by February so I could start dieting 12-16weeks out for the show. My last show in October, leading up to it, I don’t know if you remember me complaining about my stomach problems. But during last summer’s prep, I was experiencing severe bloating ect.. For the 5 shows I did in 1 year and all that dieting it consisted of I basically only ate protein powder as my protein source since to become as lean as needed, that was the leanest protein source besides soy/wheat. I knew and even had a xray done and it showed the build up of all the powder and fiber filled foods combined, wasn’t digesting, even though my water consumption was at a gallon a day. So I just knew it wasn’t something that was healthy nor wanted to experience again.
Then the experimental week came. In which the goal’s to find a vegan protein source that was lean and durable to my oh so sensitive stomach without relying on powders. The first week I loaded on batches of high protein tofu. Let’s just say, that day at work was miserable. Especially when training people and going through different range of motions while feeling your stomach cringe, knot up, and severe discomfort. Yes it was horrible to say the least. My next experimental source was seitan(wheat protein), and I loaded up on that. WOW same thing happened!! I knew soy and wheat were highly intolerant/allergenic foods but man, this girl doesn’t have too many options when looking for Lean Mean Vegan Protein! haha. So then I kinda looked into alternative protein sources like the mock meats, but literally there was nothing they all had either soy, wheat, too many carbs, or just plain processed.
That weekend, I went to Costco, picked up salmon and my body just devoured it within minutes. It felt like it just was screaming for that pure goodness of protein. My body had no bad reactions to it, digested it perfectly, and I felt good and satisfied. I then did some research and decided to put organic grass-fed omega 3 eggs and pasteurized egg whites back into my diet. My body liked that too, and when it does, I stick to it because my stomach is sensitive and rejects a lot of things, but not those sources yet. This week I experimented with Cod and sole(wild-caught) and am now sticking to fish and eggs and maybe 1-2meals with protein powder, but not all 6meals with protein powder like I was doing. So far I am happy and my body is happy, and yes that is my story on my journey so far of including animal protein into my diet. I hope you understand and support my decision. Thank You.
There is a Part Two to this…Look Out..
